THE SHORT · SUBSCRIPTIONS

Nobody can prove you are not using your subscription

A bank statement holds debits, not uses. That is the limit most savings apps would rather not name.

Eleven subscriptions, $95.96 a month, $1,151 a year. Within that total, two charges of $62.98 a month have run for eleven months without producing a single other sign of activity at the merchant. That is $756 a year.

A slightly salesy tool would conclude here: "you are not using it any more, cancel". That is exactly what it cannot know.

What a bank statement proves: the charge, its date, its amount, its regularity, a price rise, another transaction at the same merchant. What it does not prove: that you open the app, that you walk through the gym door, that the service is any use to you.

Worth keeping. The absence of another transaction at a merchant is a hint, not proof — a monthly subscription normally generates none. Only your answer closes the gap.

So the only honest question is: do you use it? If yes, the subject is closed and the tool should stop flagging it. If no, $756 a year is freed with no change to how you live. And until you have answered, the amount should be counted neither as useful nor as wasted.

Two moments make the question worth asking: every six months, because a useful subscription can stop being one; and immediately after a price rise, because that is when value for money is genuinely renegotiated.

One figure helps settle it: cost per use. A gym membership paid $1,115 over 24 months for 42 visits works out at $26.55 a visit. At that price, the drop-in session is often cheaper.

Yoseri’s Subscriptions page keeps the inventory — monthly total, yearly total, price rises detected — but never declares a subscription dormant: that is your answer, not a calculation.
